For his work “Lichtung/Clearing” an image of a group of trees in the park of the Venice Biennale which he created in 2005 Thomas Demand attached 777,000 individual leaves to paper trees, then photographed them and installed the work next to the actual park like a sort of trompe-l’oeil. At the Lufthansa Aviation Center “Lichtung/Clearing” has a similar effect. The mural with the image of a dense woodland is based on an artificial recreation of these trees. Though entirely man-made, it suggests to the onlooker the illusion of a landscape that is actually outside the building. The room inside seems forested, yet it is only a trompe l’oeil photograph that reproduces nature made of cardboard and paper.
