For his work “Lichtung/Clearing” – an image of a group of trees in the park of the Venice Biennale which he created in 2005 – Thomas Demand attached 777,000 individual leaves to paper trees, then photographed them and installed the work next to the actual park like a sort of trompe-l’oeil. At the Lufthansa Aviation Center “Lichtung/Clearing” has a similar effect. The mural with the image of a dense woodland is based on an artificial recreation of these trees. Though entirely man-made, it suggests to the onlooker the illusion of a landscape that is actually outside the building. The room inside seems forested, yet it is only a trompe l’oeil photograph that reproduces nature made of cardboard and paper.
